Summary of Marriott & SPG Co-branded Credit Cards Bonus Limits

Starting from Aug 26, 2018, AmEx and Chase work together to limit the bonuses on their Marriott & SPG co-branded credit cards. Now AmEx SPG cards can affect the eligibility of Chase Marriott credit cards, and vice versa. Here’s a summary of the limits.

Chase Co-branded Credit Cards

Chase cards have their own limits:

  • Chase 5/24 rule: Chase Marriott Premier Plus is affected by this rule, while Chase Marriott Business is not.
  • The bonus is not available to you if you: are a current cardmember of this credit card; were a previous cardmember of this business credit card who received a new cardmember bonus for this credit card within the last 24 months.

Apart from the limits above, Chase also looks at the following information from AmEx. The bonus is not available to you if you:

Chase Marriott Premier Plus

  1. are a current cardmember, or were a previous cardmember within the last 30 days, of the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card;
  2. applied and were approved for the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card, Starwood Preferred Guest Business, or Starwood Preferred Guest Luxury credit card within the last 90 days.
  3. or are a current or previous cardmember of either the Starwood Preferred Guest Business or the Starwood Preferred Guest Luxury credit card, and received a new cardmember bonus or upgrade bonus in the last 24 months.

AmEx Co-branded Credit Cards

AmEx cards have their own limits:

  • You can only get the welcome bonus once in a lifetime, so be sure to apply when the historical highest offer appears.
  • AmEx will decide whether you are eligible for a credit card bonus when you apply.

Apart from the limits above, AmEx also looks at the following information from Chase. The bonus is not available to you if you:

AmEx SPG

  1. have or have had: The Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase, The Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, Marriott Rewards Credit Card from Chase ($45 annual fee version), or The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card from JP Morgan in the last 30 days.

Summary

The rules are complicated. Chase and AmEx want you to choose only one of their cards. However, for most cases, you just have to wait at most 24 months in order to be eligible to the card you want.
