Earn Alaska MVP status after two roundtrips (CA+East Coast members only)

Alaska Boeing 737 at LAX

Alaska Airlines just launched a promotion with fast track to MVP and MVP Gold. Typically you need to fly 20,000 miles and 40,000 miles on Alaska metals (and 25% more on partners) to obtain those status. Now, with this offer, you could earn:

  • MVP status after completing 2 round trips (4 qualifying flights).
  • MVP Gold status after completing 4 round trips (8 qualifying flights).

If you qualify, you can register here and need to fly between March 6 and May 31, 2019.

As much as I think it’s a great promotion, there are certain caveats you need to pay close attention to.

First, only residents in certain states can qualify for this promotion, including California, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and District of Columbia. This means if you live in WA and OR, then you’re out of luck and can’t take advantage at this offer.

Second, not all flights will qualify for this offer. Per Alaska’s terms and conditions, only the following non-stop flights shall qualify for this offer.

California Departure:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) and Baltimore (BWI), Boston (BOS), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Philadelphia (PHL), Washington-Dulles (IAD), or Washington-Reagan (DCA)
  • San Diego (SAN) and Baltimore (BWI), Boston (BOS), Newark (EWR), or Orlando (MCO)
  • San Francisco (SFO) and Baltimore (BWI), Boston (BOS), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Orlando (MCO), Philadelphia (PHL), Raleigh (RDU), Washington-Dulles (IAD), or Washington-Reagan (DCA)
  • San Jose (SJC) and New York (JFK) or Newark (EWR)

East Coast Departure:

  • New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), or San Jose (SJC)
  • Newark (EWR) and Los Angeles (LAX), San Diego (SAN), San Francisco (SFO), or San Jose (SJC)
  • Baltimore (BWI) and Los Angeles (LAX), San Diego (SAN), or San Francisco (SFO)
  • Boston (BOS) and Los Angeles (LAX), San Diego (SAN), or San Francisco (SFO)
  • Orlando (MCO) and San Diego (SAN), or San Francisco (SFO)
  • Philadelphia (PHL) and Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO)
  • Washington-Dulles (IAD) and Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO)
  • Washington-Reagan (DCA) and Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO)

Personally I would take this offer to reach MVP Gold because I like the ability to earn RDM with a 100% bonus and four First Class guest upgrades. Plus, MVP Gold members could also get waivers for Mileage Plan service charges and ticket change fees, so if you are a heavy user of Alaska’s Mileage Plan like I am, this is a very valuable feature.

Redeeming Alaska miles on Japan Airlines First Class can be a great deal.

As a point of reference, the cheapest non-saver fare between NYC and West Coast is about $130. So potentially you could earn MVP Gold status by spending $~1000, and in this way you could earn at least 20,000 miles. We value Alaska miles at 2 c/pt, so effectively the cost is about $600.

Will you take advantage at this offer?
