BBVA Compass NBA American Express Card Review

2016.12 Update: Now the branches stopped accept applications, too. This card is discontinued.

Application Link

  • This card no longer accepts new applications. If you are lucky to have this legacy credit card, you can still enjoy its original benefits.

Benefits

  1. Earn 5% cash back on all purchases during the NBA All-Star Weekend and two weeks of the NBA finals, 3% cash back on qualifying NBA tickets, NBA in-stadium purchases, and NBAStore.com purchases, 2% cash back at supermarkets and gas stations, 1% cash back on all other purchases.
  2. Choose your favorite NBA team as your card design!
  3. No annual fee!

Disadvantages

  1. You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this card.
  2. 2016.4 Update: The 5% cashback will have a cap starting from 2016.7.1. Only the first $5000 spending will earn 5% cashback per event.
  3. The custom services of BBVA Compass Bank is not as good as that of other major banks.
  4. There is no way to setup auto pay online. You need to send email, fax, or mail a form to authorize auto pay, see this post for details.
  5. It has foreign transaction fee, so it's not a good choice outside the US.

Recommended Application Time

  1. This bank doesn’t care about the number of recent hard pulls.
  2. We recommend you apply for this card after you have a credit history of at least one year.

Summary

This card was fantastic in the past when it can earn unlimited 5% cashback twice a year. But now, you can only earn 5% cashback for the first $5000 spending per event (A max of $500 per year). There are a lot of disadvantages, so basically I would not recommend that you apply for it any more.
